Urbana – In the fight against breast cancer, Carle Clinic offers some of the most advanced early detection and diagnosis resources available. Digital mammography is the Clinic's most recent technology investment, with two units in operation on the main campus in Urbana and one more yet to be installed. All three will be relocated to Mills Breast Cancer Institute when it opens in Spring 2008. Digital units are also expected in the coming months at Carle Clinic locations in Danville and Bloomington.
Mammography is currently the most effective technology for detecting breast cancer. Though the screening procedure for patients does not change with digital mammography, the images produced provide several new advantages. Radiologists can magnify the images and adjust contrast to focus on certain areas. With the ability to work with existing images, radiologists are less likely to have to call patients back for additional images. Furthermore, the electronic file makes it easier for physicians to share images and work together to make a diagnosis or treatment plan.
“This technology provides the most recent advances in breast imaging,” says Carle Clinic Radiologist Barbara Kammer, MD. “I am especially pleased with the quality of detail in the images. I am certain digital mammography will serve our patients well as we work to advance health care in this region.”
To schedule a mammogram, patients should talk to their primary care physician or call (217) 326-1894.
